One day until the big kick-off…

Filed under: Features — admin @ 7:53 am

Steff Wright, outgoing Chairman of Lincoln City Football Club and owner of Gusto Homes, tells LoveLincoln.co.uk what plans he has for watching the World Cup

Do you have any special plans for the World Cup?

Well I’m looking forward to celebrating England winning it. I have got a bottle of champagne prepared!

Do you think England can win it?

Definitely yes.  You have to believe! Why would you want to start watching a competition if you don’t believe they would win?

What do you do when you watch a match?

Interestingly I have looked in my diary at the games that England is already involved in. They are the key games I am interested in so far. One of the games is close to a club presentation evening so all the dads of the lads are trying to get a big screen. Watching England in the World Cup for me is about being with a group of people. One game I will be with the lads and dads of the under-11 football team. The second I will be at a housing conference in Harrogate, I will be finding a pub and watching it on the big screen with half the people in the housing industry. The other game I will be watching in my village pub. It is interesting how I will be watching it with different people but we all have the same cause – cheering on England.

Who is your favourite player?

One player who is making the difference for us is Wayne Rooney. He is head and shoulders above anyone else we have got. He’s the key to unlocking goals for us.

If England get knocked out which country will get your support and why? Or would you stop watching it all together?

After some hesitation I would probably fall back on Brazil. Although I really cant see myself getting excited about supporting another European club.  South American football always has a certain flair and excitement about it, and Brazil are iconic as a football team.

Imagine if England reached the final – what would your plans for the day be?

I haven’t quite got that much belief to have planned anything, but what I do know is that I will want to drink at the end of it! The village we live in would put up a big screen and get everyone involved, it would be a massively memorable event. When England were in the final of the Rugby World Cup we put a big screen up. My big projector is up in the garage ready.

Two days until the big kick-off…

Thea Wilson, a first-year Biomedical Sciences student at the University of Lincoln and 1st team hockey captain, tells us about her plans for the World Cup

Do you have any special plans for the World Cup?

I’m planning to watch all the matches with friends in pubs probably.

Do you think England can win it?

I’m not so sure about them winning it… they have a chance if they play well but that’s not always the case. Realistically no, I don’t think they can but I’d like to think they would. There are so many other good teams, like Spain.

What do you do when you watch a match?

I tend to go to the pub or I’ll invite friends round and watch it at home. It varies really, depending on whether I can be bothered to get changed out of my pyjamas!

Who is your favourite player?

I would have to say Steven Gerrard; he is awesome, well most of the time. He is an all-round good player. I have to admit, he is also easy on the eye, so I don’t mind watching him.

If England get knocked out which country will get your support and why? Or would you stop watching it all together?

I wouldn’t stop watching it all together as I enjoy watching the football even when it’s not England playing. I would probably support Spain or Brazil if England get knocked out. They have got some awesome players and I think that one of them is likely to win it.

Imagine if England reached the final – what would your plans for the day be?

Well I would definitely go to the pub to watch that one.  The atmosphere would be better at the pub rather than at home. There will definitely be a lot of drinking and cheering involved. Even if England don’t get to the final I will go to the pub to watch it – it’s a good excuse to go to the pub with my friends.

Three days until the big kick-off…

Filed under: Features — admin @ 8:02 am

Leigh Curtis, Lincoln City writer for Lincolnshire Echo, gives us an insight into his plans for World Cup month.

Do you have any special plans for the World Cup?

When I was younger I used to go out and watch it in the pubs but I don’t tend to do that much now as you struggle to find room to sit and you find yourself drenched in lager. I am definitely an avid home watcher as you get to hear all the information.

Do you think England can win it?

Honestly, no, I don’t think England are anywhere near good enough. Every player needs to be playing at their full maximum level. There’s too much pressure on Wayne Rooney. If he gets injured then he is in for it as there is no one decent to take his place. Stephen Gerrard and Frank Lampard the two centre midfielders need to be on song every match. I have to say it would be great to see them do it.

What do you do when you watch a match?

I usually scream at the TV, which infuriates my wife greatly. I will start the match in a civilised manner, lying on the settee with a nice glass of wine, until one of the players does something stupid and then I begin shouting.  It’s a good relief to shout at the TV until my wife comes in to remind me that they can’t hear me.

Who is your favourite player?

I would have to say on the England team, purely because I like Liverpool, Steven Gerrard. He had a poor season at club level because of the players around him but when he is on form he is the best central midfielder at driving forward and scoring goals. In the whole World Cup, I enjoy watching Xavi, a Spanish central midfielder; he is wonderful to watch because he is technically gifted. He always has time on the ball and is the best passer of the ball I have seen. I would go so far as to saying he is the best midfielder in the world. Immense to watch and he makes it look easy. Definitely an all-time great of Spanish football.

If England get knocked out which country will get your support and why? Or would you stop watching it all together?

I have to say France. The rules of the sports desk at work stated that I had to buy a Panini sticker album – yes, aged 30 – and whichever team you filled in first were the team you have to support if or when England go out the competition. One lad got Ivory Coast….

Imagine if England reached the final – what would your plans for the day be?

I would get loads in beer in and probably buy a new TV – it’s a good excuse to get one. I would reserve the settee in plenty of time from the wife and put it on the calendar as according to her “If it’s not on the calendar it’s not happening!”

Four days until the big kick-off…

Maz Nadjm, Community Product Manager at Sky and advisor on social media to Chelsea FC, tells us what he plans to do for the World Cup

Do you have any special plans for the World Cup?

I’ve been waiting for four years, so I’m very excited. I look forward to good games, good company and good food.

Do you think England can win it?

Why not? I’m a fan of Capello and I believe he can pull it off. Capello used to be the manager of my team, Juventus, and he did a great job there.

What do you do when you watch a match?

As a family man I probably won’t go to pubs as much as I did four years ago. I look forward to seeing the games with my little kid at home on Sky HD. This will be his first World Cup!

Who is your favourite player?

Difficult question as I have many favourites. If I have to pick one then it has to be Lionel Messi: he is truly a football magician, gifted, humble and still so young.

If England get knocked out which country will get your support and why? Or would you stop watching it all together?

Let’s hope they don’t get knocked out. I will continue watching – let us remember this event happens only once in four years.

It’s a shame that Iran, where I was born, didn’t qualify this year. I do like the football from Brazil, Spain, Italy and Argentina and will keep a close eye on them.

Imagine if England reached the final – what would your plans for the day be?

I will cancel all other commitments including any hospital appointments I might have for that day! Let us hope England reaches the final.

Memories of a Cologne summer

Filed under: Fortysomething — admin @ 4:13 pm

Sipping beer at the World Cup 2006

It’s almost here: that most blessed of summer rituals. Better than a Lord’s test match or a bike ride to the Pyewipe – once every four years we’re treated to the magic that is World Cup month.

Given the agonies I have endured ever since I first started supporting England at the World Cup I have only modest expectations this time around. Anything better than the last 16 will come as a pleasant surprise. My first England- supporting World Cup was in 1982 (this after two World Cups when it was the norm for England to have failed to qualify). With Keegan and Brooking injured (sound familiar?) we nevertheless started brightly with a 3-1 win over France. However our lack of a cutting edge proved to be our undoing and despite having not lost a match in the entire finals we were sent home after two goalless draws in the second stage.

I’m looking forward to this summer’s tournament but unless England actually win it it won’t be as memorable for me as the 2006 World Cup. That summer I joined my brother on a brief foray to Cologne where we spent four days youth hostelling, sipping kölsch (the local beer) and watching games on communal big screens. The climax of the trip was my first ever World Cup finals match, France v Togo, where I got to see stars such as Thierry Henry and Franck Ribery strut their stuff in a routine 2-0 win over the underdogs. France were an ageing team back then and the tournament was a last hurrah for the likes of Lilian Thuram, Claude Makelele and Fabien Barthez. The home crowd was firecely pro-Togo as you might expect.

Tunisia 0 Ukraine 1

What sticks in my mind more than the game itself though was the atmosphere around Cologne during our stay. It was like a chilled out United Nations meeting where people of all continents and creeds had all had a few drinks in the sunshine and were feeling at peace with the world. We chatted to Germans on the bus about local history; we discussed the merits of Andriy Schevchenko with a couple of Tunisia fans; we searched in vain for those beautiful Brazilians the TV cameras always manage to pick out. In short, we had a wonderful time making friends at the world’s biggest carnival.

This summer we’ll have to watch from afar as the world’s top 32 teams do battle in South Africa. Here’s hoping we can bring the World Cup home in 2018.

It’s Coming Home…

Five days until the big kick-off…

LoveLincoln.co.uk  caught up with Lincoln City defender Adam Watts to ask what he’ll be doing during the World Cup

Do you have any special plans for the World Cup?

I have no plans for the World Cup. I like to be in England when the big competitions are on as there is massive hype when ever England play.

Do you think England can win it?

I think England have a good as chance as any to win. But there are so many good countries now it’s wide open.

What do you like to do when you watch a match?

I like to chill and watch the games, might go to a nice pub by the river with my mates – you can’t beat it.

Who is your favourite England player?

My favourite player at the moment is Rio Ferdinand – he is a great leader and has been consistent for England for a number of years – so it’s a blow that he’ll be missing out.

If England get knocked out which country will get your support and why? Or would you stop watching it all together?

If England get knocked out I would probably watch Brazil or Spain as they play the best football. It is very entertaining!

Imagine if England reached the final – what would your plans for the day be?

If England gets to the final I wouldn’t change a thing. I would just chill with my mates!

Helping hand for Joiners Arms

Filed under: News — admin @ 11:55 am

Lincolnshire local Jo Wright has come to the rescue of the Joiners Arms in Victoria Street as the new landlady.

The pub on Victoria Street in Lincoln closed suddenly back in April when the former owners left.

Jo (39) also owns her own cleaning company and has previous experience running a pub at Willingham by Stow.

Jo said: “I used to come in with my partner Terry Hughes, and it’s somewhere I’ve always thought someone could do so much with.

“I’ve managed a pub before, for three years at Willingham by Stow, but becoming the new tenants here all happened really quickly. I only rang up to enquire about it.

“All the regulars are coming back in and they’ve been wonderful, really supportive. And all the teams are coming back. We’re even trying to get more people for activities such as darts and pool.

“There’s a complete mix of clientele, lots of regulars, but youngsters as well. The main plan is just to build it back up, get the people that used to come back in.”
