Filed under: News — admin @ 10:01 am

Car enthusiasts listen up! Lincoln is getting ready for the arrival of MINI mania once again! The fifth Lincoln BIG MINI Day is set to take place on Sunday 15th April on the Brayford waterfront.

Last year more than 200 MINI fanatics attended the event and this year the trend is set to continue. There will be a wide range of MINIs on show dating from 1959 to the modern BMW versions.

With more than 200 of these much loved cars expected to be on display there’s sure to be something for everyone, whether your favourite is the MINI Cooper S, Clubman, high-performance 1275GT or one of MINI’s other famous models.

Lincoln BIG Events and Promotions Manager Michael Armstrong commented: “The MINI Day is a real highlight in the city’s events calendar.

“The MINI has a wide appeal and is a car which has lent itself to some exciting modifications.  We are sure that our friends at the Trent Valley Mini Owners’ Club will have another treat in store this time around.”

As well as the shining MINIs on show there will be a number of trade stalls selling car accessories, memorabilia and model cars to keep fans entertained.

Soper of Lincoln will also be showcasing two of the latest models from the MINI range outside DoubleTree by Hilton Lincoln on Brayford Wharf North.

Visitors to the hotel on the day will be invited to enter a competition and win an overnight stay at the hotel and dinner at The Electric Bar & Restaurant on a night of their choice (subject to availability) by guessing the number of DoubleTree by Hilton balloons that have been squeezed into one of the cars.

The event is here for one day only so make sure you catch a glimpse of these iconic cars while you can!

Lincoln Castle to Become Top Tourist Destination

Filed under: News — admin @ 11:01 am

LoveLincoln.co.uk is excited to report that the £19.9 million Lincoln Castle Revealed project has been given the green light thanks to a £12m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

The planned improvements, which will transform Lincoln Castle into one of the country’s top tourist attractions, include a new vault to showcase the Magna Carta and the Charter of the Forest, refurbishment of both prison buildings and the repair of the castle walls.

Once the project is completed entry into the castle grounds will be free during daylight hours which is hoped will increase visitor numbers and bring benefits for the surrounding businesses.

Councillor Martin Hill, Leader of Lincolnshire County Council, commented: “The project will make Lincoln Castle one of the country’s top historic attractions, attracting thousands more visitors. It’s estimated this could bring up to a 55% increase in the overall value of tourism in Lincoln.

“That translates to a £68m boost for the local economy and around 1,100 new jobs. As many visitors to Lincoln stay in rural Lincolnshire, we would expect these economic benefits to be felt across the county.

“Having committed 10 years of hard work and more than £5m to this project, we’re delighted that the HLF has given us such a generous grant and we’re extremely grateful for their support.

Not only are we ensuring that this important local landmark is kept in good condition for future generations, we’re writing new pages in the castle’s history.”

Lincolnshire County Council is contributing £5.2m to the project and they have also put in a bid for £1.1m of European funding. The rest of the money needed is going to be generated through further fundraising by the charity Historic Lincoln Trust which has been set up to do this.

The proposed plans are hoped to be completed by April 2015 which will coincide with the Magna Carta’s 800th anniversary.

Olympic Torch’s Lincoln journey confirmed

London 2012 Olympic Torch

Lincoln people will have the chance to take part in the Olympic dream this summer, following today’s official confirmation of the route the Olympic Torch will take through the city.

Exactly one month before the opening ceremony in London, on 27th and 28th June 2012, the torch comes to Lincoln.  Residents, businesses and visitors wishing to welcome it to the city can now see the route it will take and the recommended viewing points at www.lincoln.gov.uk/olympictorchrelay.

With cheering crowds lining the streets, the Lincoln Olympic Torch Relay will begin on South Park Road on 27th June, weave its way across the city, past the Brayford Pool, up the bustling High Street and past the cathedral’s east side, before heading to the special evening celebration at Yarborough Sports Ground – tickets for which will be available from the Lincoln Drill Hall box office from Thursday 10th May.

The following day, 28th June, the Torch will leave Lincoln Cathedral, heading through the iconic grounds of Lincoln Castle, where a special picnic and activity morning will be held for selected school children, before leaving the city past the Grandstand on its way to Nottingham.

More than 7,000 inspirational Torchbearers will carry the Olympic Torch around Britain, and two special people have been chosen by the City of Lincoln Council, as host authority organising the Lincoln leg of the Olympic Torch Relay.

Thirty-three year-old Nick Hope is a passionate volunteer who strongly believes in improving the lives of young people in his neighbourhood.  He will carry the Olympic Torch on its way through Lincoln on Wednesday 27th June.  Nick started volunteering when he took his children to football sessions, and is heavily involved in ‘Stand Up Speak Up’ with Lincoln City Football Club, which uses sport to bring young people of different nationalities together outside of school.

Nick said: “When they told me, it was just ‘Oh wow, I’m going to carry the Olympic Torch!  When I told my family, they thought I was winding them up, and it’s still a shock!  I know it’ll be a bit daunting at first, but I’m sure I’ll get used to it.  I play football, so I’m fairly fit, but I think I’ll do a bit of training for this!”

At 75 years-old, Dot Fraser is one of the older members of Lincoln Wellington Athletic Club, but regularly wins more medals and almost then any other club member and proudly holds every club record for sprinters over the age of 55 years-old.  She still travels all over the UK and far beyond to compete, along with five other ‘athletic veterens’ and will carry the Olympic Torch on its journey away from Lincoln on Thursday 28th June.

Dot said: “It feels absolutely wonderfulI can’t believe I’ve been chosen, it is such an honour!  I’ll be running from Lincoln towards Nottingham, and I shall run just as I usually do.  Running for me is like being a part of a big family. I’m looking forward to watching the Olympic Games on TV – that way you can watch all the sports, rather than just a few.”

Downloadable maps, recommended viewing places, information about the evening celebration and FAQs are available at www.lincoln.gov.uk/olympictorchrelay from Monday 19th March, with further information due to be added continually in the run up to the Lincoln Olympic Torch Relay.

The streets along the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay can also be viewed in full at www.london2012.com/olympictorchrelay which gives street-by-street details and proposed start times for when the Olympic Torch will travel through Lincoln.  Residents living in and around Lincoln can find out when it will be travelling along their nearest high street, near their home or past their local shop.

Councillor Donald Nannestad, Portfolio Holder for Recreational Services and Health at the City of Lincoln Council, said: “We’re incredibly proud to host a part of the Olympic Torch Relay and think that Lincoln is a fantastic setting to get involved with the celebrations.  I hope that people who live and work in and around the city will get the chance to see the Olympic Flame and witness the spectacle of the Olympic Torch Relay.  The confirmation of the route really brings the celebration to life and will allow people to plan how they can get involved, by picking their spot on the street to cheer the relay on or by deciding to attend the evening celebration. We’ve got some fantastic Torchbearers, all of whom have contributed to their local communities, so it will be great for them to take part in such a prestigious event right on their doorstep.”

Janet Inman, Chief Executive of Lincolnshire Sports Partnership, said: “The announcement today is fantastic for people in Lincoln, and throughout Lincolnshire.  We are incredibly proud that Lincolnshire can play its part in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and look forward to seeing the Olympic Torch on its journey around our county.”

Will Mason, from Lincoln Castle, said: “We’re really excited about the Olympic Torch coming to Lincoln.  And where better to celebrate than in the historic heart of the city?  At Lincoln Castle, we’re putting on a special breakfast and activities for pupils from selected local schools.  They’ll be waving off the torch as it makes its way through the grounds before heading out of the city.  We can’t wait.”

The Torchbearers confirmed to carry the Flame through Lincoln also include those that were successful through the public nomination run by LOCOG and the Presenting Partners, Coca Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung.  LOCOG has endeavoured to slot all community Torchbearers within an hour of their nomination address so family and friends can cheer them on.  Each Torchbearer will wear a white and gold uniform, which has been designed by adidas.

Sebastian Coe, Chair of LOCOG added: “Today we bring the Olympic Torch Relay to life.  The Flame symbolises the Olympic spirit and its journey around the UK will bring the excitement of the Games to our streets.  Now the people know the route the Olympic Flame will be carried along and the Torchbearers for their community, they can start planning how they might  celebrate and make it Lincoln’s moment to shine.”

Welcoming the Olympic Torch – evening celebration

The City of Lincoln Council is working with LOCOG and the three Presenting Partners of the Relay – Coca Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung – to host a free, family-friendly evening event to celebrate the Olympic Flame.

The free event at Yarborough Sports Ground will feature local dance and music.  Free tickets for the evening celebration will be available from Lincoln Drill Hall from Thursday 10th May.  Those wishing to attend should check local media and www.lincoln.gov.uk/olympictorchrelay for more details over the next few months.

On top of grabbing a pint of the black stuff at your favourite Lincoln pub, there’s plenty for people to do and LoveLincoln.co.uk has got the scoop on what’s on for this year’s St Paddy’s Day! Here’s just a few highlights we’ve picked out to help you get the party started!

The Hooleys & Friends at Lincoln Drill Hall

Get your dancing shoes on and head to Lincoln Drill Hall at 8pm on St Paddy’s Day for an evening of Celtic celebration during St Patrick’s night with The Hooleys & Friends! The definition of a Hooley is “to meet secretly at the homes of friends and family to drink, sing and play music”, but musical legends The Hooleys prefer to bring the party into more public places by performing a unique spectrum of Celtic and European cultural tunes with the raw passion and diverse style they’re known for. Tickets cost £8 in advance and £10 on the day.

Gutsy Irish Folk Music at The Dog & Bone

Fill a glass with your favourite spirit and grab a bowl of homemade Irish stew at The Dog & Bone while enjoying a gutsy Irish folk performance from local musician Eddy O’Dwyer to help get the St Patrick’s Day party swinging! Formerly of the UK punk rock band Breene, Eddy O’Dwyer offers an acoustic musical blend influenced by John Drury, Steve Tilston, Christy Moore, Dropkick Murphys and Guinness. Eddy O’Dwyer hits the mic at 8:30pm, and the show is free to attend.

St Paddy’s Carnival at the Engine Shed

At 10.30pm on St Patrick’s Day night  the Engine Shed will go all green for its annual St Paddy’s Carnival! Complete with free green candy floss, circus performers, a strongman competition and prizes at the coconut shy and hook-a-duck stalls, the St Paddy’s Carnival will be accompanied by the best St Paddy’s soundtrack – spun by the Engine Shed DJs! Tickets are £6 plus a booking fee and can be purchased online at www.engineshed.co.uk, by calling 0844 8888 766, or by stopping in at the Engine Shed box office.

Classic Oldies from the 50s and 60s and Comedy from Stewart Lee

Those not interested in ‘greening out’ this St Paddy’s Day can still enjoy a fun-filled and memorable night on the town in Lincoln. At 7.30pm head to Lincoln Theatre Royal for Let The Good Times Roll – a wonderfully unique live 10-piece production paying tribute to some of the greatest and deeply adored music of the 50s & 60s including Rock Around the Clock, Teenager in Love, Be My Baby, Please Please Me and many more! Tickets are £18.50 or £17.50 for concessions.

If oldies aren’t your thing, that’s okay! The 41st greatest stand-up comedian ever Stewart Lee steps on stage at the Lincoln Performing Arts Centre at 8pm for a night of hilarity and laughs. Not sure what to expect? Ponder this question: what can a sexless middle-aged married man, whose life now consists mainly of watching Scooby Doo cartoons with a four-year-old boy, possibly find to write comedy about? The answer is: a lot! Tickets are £17.50 or £15 for concessions.

Strait Up Fun For Everyone

Filed under: News — admin @ 11:11 am

If you’re not familiar with the stretch of shops – known as The Strait – connecting Steep Hill and the High Street, The Fête on the Strait will be a perfect introduction.

Taking place on Saturday 24th March, this completely free event will feature a whole host of family fun including face painting and buskers performing your favourite songs from every decade who are even open to requests!

The event hopes to attract both locals and tourists with about 20 traditional stalls located on The Strait ranging from craft stalls to biscuit and cake stalls.

Richard Baxter, owner of Goodies sweet shop and event organiser, commented: “The aim of the event is to make this part of Lincoln known as The Strait and not just the bottom of Steep Hill.

“We are currently raising money for an archway that will sit between Kind bar and Oasis Dental Care to mark the beginning of The Strait.

“So far we have managed to raise about £1,000 and after this year’s three events we are hoping to have reached our target which will enable us to install this important feature for The Strait.”

This will be the first Fête on the Strait of 2012, with future events planned for 25th August and 3rd November, and festivities will take place between 10am and 4pm. Local businessman John Birkett will cut a ribbon marking the official opening of the event.

Lincoln Gets a Makeover

Filed under: News — admin @ 12:03 pm

The Visit Lincoln Partnership and Lincoln design and print company Ruddocks have revealed a new brand image for the city.

The Visit Lincoln Partnership is giving Lincoln the makeover it deserves and expressing the beauty behind this city by giving it a new brand identity.

Whether people are coming to visit the beautiful medieval city, the breathtaking cathedral or the number of boutiques the city has to offer, there is something in Lincoln for everyone.

Emma Tatlow, Visit Lincoln Partnership Manager, commented: “Lincoln’s brand has been evolving for years, creating a city of contrasts, yet it works so well as one. Within a few minutes the city moves from that unique historical centre to the bustling lower High Street.

“Visit Lincoln Partnership aims to increase awareness of Lincoln on a national and international level. We want to attract visitors, investors, large conferences and events, students and entrepreneurs.

“Lincoln currently attracts three million visitors to the city each year but we know we can attract more. Through the Visit Lincoln Partnership we are working to put Lincoln on the map.”

What better way to do this than to introduce a new brand identity? The identity is based on the fleur de lys, the symbol of St Mary, patron saint of Lincoln, and the typeface has been modified to suggest the Norman archways for which Lincoln is famous.

The contrast of ancient culture with a modern city is what gives Lincoln its character and we at LoveLincoln.co.uk are delighted that we now have a brand that conveys this.

You can expect to see this campaign in full force, with the first sign in place on the A57 as you come in to Lincoln.

This is just the beginning of the campaign and already countless amounts of local businesses and residents are in favour of it. Let us know what you think and give us your views on our Twitter and Facebook pages!
